What is the world’s largest whiskey festival, you ask?

It is none other than Belfast Whiskey Week! BWW is set to be Ireland’s Largest Whiskey Festival and the World’s Largest Irish Whiskey Festival. When we say large, we mean it! The festival will feature involvement from over 60 brands and distilleries. Lead by a community of passionate whiskey enthusiasts, this event aims to bring Belfast to the fore of Whiskey Heritage, Production & Legacy. Moreover, it will give whiskey lovers the chance to taste new products, sample old favourites and learn about the myriad aspects of whiskey making.

In its early stages, Belfast Whiskey week was a small tasting event with 7 tastings in 7 nights. It all began with the simple goal of welcoming people to Belfast to have a drink and reconnect with the history of distilling. That simple idea sparked the festival we know and love today. When the event went virtual last year (due to COVID-19) it only got bigger. Supporters tuned in from all over the world. This year, the festival is proud to feature events both online and in person! To be specific, 72 events out of the full 96 are available to attend physically.

That said, BWW is taking the utmost care when it comes to making sure that their in person festival events are COVID safe for all attendees. This year, they’ve also designed the festival so that it is virtually accessible. This means that everything is streamed live to a bespoke platform which allows people to stay home and enjoy the festival from their couches. Wherever you are, you can participate in BBW!

What is Irishmalts doing to get involved?

We had the chance to speak to Paul Kane, the organizer of Belfast Whiskey Week, 2021. “It is whiskey from all over. Whiskey distillery representation from all over the world”, Paul said. He even noted that “this festival features 18 thousand mini tasting bottles, which equates to 2.5 thousand tasting sets”.

“There are interesting drams all through the festival”, Paul assured us. “All of those tastings are testament to ways that Irish Whiskey was made. We’ll be looking at whiskey that is hard to find and collectable. We’ll be looking at bottles all the way through to the 1980’s. It is a lovely way to look at whisky that has changed over time and hark back to ask ourselves how we’re progressing or regressing”.

When is Belfast Whiskey Week?

The festival will take place from the 23rd of July to the 31st of July, 2021. Obviously, the home base for the festival will be Belfast, Northern Ireland! Will you be going?
